My Food Adventure
I have learned a lot from taking this class, not just things about English and writing but I also learned my strengths and weaknesses, what types of writing I’m good at etc. My final project showed me strengths of writing and my weakness of presenting. I chose the title for my project to be “Unhealthy Eating” and I talked and informed my target audience group the dangers of an unhealthy diet and what problems you can run into if you don’t eat healthily. The project also showed me the importance of target audience, talking to a small child is not the same as talking to a teacher or an adult. I also learned that you have to be versatile in writing to related to almost all of your readers.
The FOOD NARRATIVE was my favorite major assignment this year in the class. I like sharing stories and this assignment was a good opportunity to do so. I talked about Dolma and what it means to me and my family and what role it plays in my life. When I first started on the paper I started out a little slow just because I didn’t really have any experience writing so much on just one topic. After a little while, things just clicked and I finished it. The draft and the final are very different from each other because I had made some mistakes about what order I should put paragraphs. One goal I had for the food narrative was that I wanted to make my writing to be more open and have a personal connection and I feel like I did just that in the final revision of the paper.
The RHETORICAL ANALYSIS was the hardest project for me this year in English 1010. Rhetoric was hard for me to understand for some reason and that made the paper I had to write 5 times harder. I later fully understood it after I finished my draft and that made the final and the draft look very different. I wanted to have my analysis have substance in the writing to make me a more trustworthy author.
The CIVIC ENGAGEMENT PROJECT helped me the most figuring out my strengths and weaknesses in writing. I found out that I need to work on giving out presentations and speaking out in front of large groups of people. I’m glad I found that out now rather than some time in the future and having to panic because I couldn’t do it and I can improve on that part. This project was the most fun to do mainly because we could choose ourselves what it’s going to be about and how we want to go about it. I made a power point for the project and presentation but in the final revision, I had changed it from a powerpoint to a brochure bringing attention to the disease and unhealthy eating going on today.
Learning buffets were the fun part of the class because there were a lot of choices you can make on how you want to go about doing it. I chose the learning buffets that were mostly hands on because I like to learn that way and I find it more likely to stay in my brain. My favorite learning buffet I did was the food menu I created, mostly because I can let my creativity take over and put almost anything I want on it. The only challenge I had when it came to learning buffets is that there was a lot of choices I could make on what to do it on.
One of my favorite things about this class was that I learned a lot about myself and I could use the skills, strategies, and techniques I learned in the future for college and work. This class was my first concurrent enrollment class so it pushed me to work harder in school. I feel like college will be just fine if I put in good effort and use the knowledge I learned from this class. I wish every class I had in high school helped me in academics like this one.
